Important Information for every team member & parent:
The REACH Department would like to provide you with the following information regarding your upcoming mission trip and cell phone use. Please educate yourself and be aware of your cell phone provider’s international calling/ texting/ multimedia/ data plans prior to departure. Data plans may need to be turned off during international travel in some instances. There is more information than we can possibly share regarding this subject. Typical costs for international texting range from 25 to 50 cents per text. Multi-media messages, data plans and pictures are often billed at even higher rates. Unlimited texting packages typically do not cover international texting. Based on the averages recently reported by Nielsen (see below), sending 71-105 texts a day could be considered normal. Please be aware that during a 7 day mission trip, this could add up to $125 to $367 or more on your next cell phone bill – just for texting.
Nielsen.com analyzes more than 40,000 mobile bills every month and the January 2010 results are staggering:
· American teenagers are using 3,146 messages a month, which translates into more than 10 messages every hour of the month that they are not sleeping or in school.
· Even the under 12 segment are sending 1,146 messages per month, which is almost four text messages per waking hour that they are not at school
FYI – Our COTK “survey” showed monthly teenage texting of 5,000 to 7,000 per month.
