Purpose of this Mission: Construction, Medical, Dental, VBS
This team will return for a next trip to La Gonave Island, Haiti.
*Dates subject to slight adjustment.
Team size limited to 7 due to transportation.
This trip is good for college and adults. A little tougher and sweatier, but amazing.
Construction has been added as we return on a 7 day trip with construction, medical, dental, and children's outreach on La Gonave Island.
Plan to fly out of New Orleans on Saturday to Port au Prince, Haiti and will return Saturday after a full week of outreach. The team will then take boat transportation over to the island. Last year's team brought back many stories of outreach and evangelism.
Daily activities: The team will break into construction, medical, dental, and children's outreach teams, each setting up daily to service the needs of the people. Our team will serve alongside other year-round missionaries and will provide a wide range of medical services, such as HIV/AIDS treatment, trauma for burns, lacerations, and infections, baby delivery, immunizations, and many other services currently not readily available to these people.
By offering healthcare to Gonavians who have none, we have the opportunity
to use the clinic as another tool for giving the life changing message of Jesus Christ to people hurting physically and spiritually.
How to pray for Haiti:
Hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings were also destroyed during a 2010 earthquack, including some major government buildings. Aid arrived from around the world, but coordination was difficult in the aftermath of the earthquake, and assistance will be needed for a long time to come. For a host of reasons, Haiti struggled as a nation from its very inception. This shattering disaster could be an opportunity to reshape not just the physical infrastructure of the nation, but the cultural, economic, political and societal infrastructures as well. Some points to cover in prayer include:
a) The rebuilding efforts will take years. Haiti’s infrastructure was never good, and Port-au-Prince’s was especially weak due to rapid urbanization from poorer rural areas. Countless homes will need to be rebuilt or restored; the sheer scale of money and manpower needed is staggering for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation. Pray for the best long-term development for the city and nation, rather than quick fixes. Pray for generous assistance from wealthier neighbors and nations and agencies from further abroad.
b) The human suffering was immense in the immediate aftermath and will continue for years. The shared emotional trauma of the events, the massive loss of life and the long-term injuries will all leave major scars on the Haitian population. Healing from such hurts needs time, care and the love of God.
c) Haiti was a financial and social mess even before the earthquake. Repairing all the damage, however, will not create a healthy economy. Haiti must rebuild beyond its previous state and develop long-term plans and policies that are shaped with wisdom and justice.

About La Gonave Island: Life today in La Gonave is void of any hope. There is no natural supply of fresh drinking water leaving people to hike an average of five miles a day to drink from cesspools full of disease. Less than 10 percent of the fresh potable water required to sustain 100,000 people was available on La Gonave when Guts Church started drilling wells.
1 in 10 babies die before turning one and 2 in 10 children die before turning five. Life expectancy is around 45 years old for those who can survive. The high mortality rate is caused primarily by the lack of fresh drinking water and lack of nourishing food. Children regularly eat mud cakes, by mixing urine with dirt, to curb their hunger.
We will be working in conjunction with Guts Church and their established ministry there. This link provides a background to the outreach on La Gonave:
Weather: Temperatures can range between the 70's to the 90's daily. You will be provided with a complete packing list by your team leader.
